Roy Rogers, born Leonard Franklin Slye, came into his musical career calling square dances in Duck Ron, OH. After moving west, he auditioned as a backup to the then top box office western star, Gene Autry. The audition went well and history was made. "The King of the Cowboys" was born. Roy's film career spanned from 1937 to 1951 in ninety-one starring roles. He was the only western star to surpass Gene Autry in popularity. Because of high personal standards, he became a role model. Roy plays himself - a Republic Western movie star who enlists his cowboy movie star friends to help Dale Evans keep the circus she inherited from her father. The "who's who" of cowboy stars include Wild Bill Elliot, Allen Lane, Robert Livingston and Sunset Carson along with Trigger, Gabby Hayes and Bob Nolan.
