Artist Profile
Barry Shell began playing professionally at the age of 14, and to date he has been involved in nearly forty album projects as artist, producer, songwriter, or collaborator.
At college, Barry majored in fine arts and his surrealistic style of painting won awards and drew much attention to his left-of-center creative talents. Since the visual arts department shared a building with the school of music, it didn't take him long to realize the correlation between art and music.
"They are one and the same", he says. "They are not even aimed at different senses. You can 'hear' a good painting, and you can 'see' good music. You can 'feel' them both. The only difference is the tools the artist uses to create a piece."
Under the alias of Kudzu, Barry has been painting ever since. His tools are ever-changing and include everything from hand-crafted instruments to an arsenal of electronic gear - the sounds of which he refers to as his colors. His fascination with "visual Music" carries over into the name of his record label. The Treecastle Music Gallery, which features his own work as well as that of other artists whose approach to music mirrors his own. Today, Barry lives and creates music (and makes no distinction between the two) in The Treehouse, his mountain top studio in northeast Georgia.
