For over a decade, producer/flutist Nicholas Gunn has introduced listeners to the sprawling beauty of the Native Southwest through his vibrant compositions. Now he takes the experience to the next level. BEYOND GRAND CANYON is an audio/visual program that pairs Gunn's canyon-inspired melodies with film-maker Michael Fatali's vibrant Southwestern photography. In terms of Gunn's contribution, the music is vintage Nicholas, featuring upbeat, sometimes awe-inspiring tunes that blend dancing flute tones with strings, dramatic percussion and earthy vocal tones. The DVD portion features those same tunes, only paired with stunning photography of wind-eroded mesas, crystalline waterfalls and other geological wonders from the region. That pairing works beautifully, adding a whole new dimension to the music and helping the listener to understand Gunn's compositional inspiration.
